Dear Congregation,

I hope all of you are finding things to do while you're staying safe in your homes.

Since there has not been an improvement on the COVID-19 situation, Sunday worship and all church activities will continue to be suspended until further notice. Please continue to stay home. As soon as our church and government leaders say it is safe to return to normal, we will have to be patient and listen to them. We will keep you informed of any changes.

Dear FPCG Friends,

It is an unsettled time for all of us as we continue to learn more each day about this novel coronavirus, COVID-19.

In response to Grace Presbytery’s request, your Session voted yesterday, March 15th, to suspend all face-to-face church activities, including worship, for the next few weeks. Session will meet again, via conference call, on March 30th to reassess the situation. Stay tuned for updates.

This is a difficult time, and it calls for difficult decisions. I realize that in times of uncertainty our instinct is to gather close to comfort and support one another. But in this environment, we recognize that everyday handshakes and hugs, while signs of love, may actually contribute to this pandemic. Additionally, in response to calls from our community and the CDC, we believe it is imperative that we do what we can to “flatten the (growth) curve” of this virus.

While we will not be together in worship or study, it is essential that we remain connected. There are several things you can do to assist in maintaining relationship with one another. First, use your phone or computer to check on each other. Place a phone call, or send a text message.  The Shepherds will be contacting everyone in the congregation periodically to check on your well-being, and to ask if you need anything. Additionally, Brian Adams has made himself available to pick up groceries or medicines should you need them and don’t want to risk getting out. Pam Cooper has agreed to also be a point person for us during this time. Contact information is below.

You can expect to hear from me during each week. I plan to stay in touch with you via email, FPC’s Facebook group, and www.fpcgainesville.net. Check these frequently for updates.

The church office will be closed during this time. Sarah and I will come in periodically to maintain the everyday business, but will not keep regular office hours. We, too, are practicing the recommended “social distancing.”

Because our church will function to some degree, we will continue to have expenses that need to be addressed. Please keep up your generous giving, as FPC will continue to have needs to be met. You may either mail your checks to the church, or put them through the mail slot in the door (north side). We will see that they are posted and deposited in a timely fashion. Thank you in advance for being good stewards of the resources God has given you.

Yesterday evening I heard Chris Cuomo, on CNN, talking about all the changes this virus is requiring of us. He was specifically discussing the need for people across the country to practice smart social distancing to slow the spread of COVID-19. He stated, “this isn’t about ME, this is about WE.” That’s the attitude we all must maintain right now. Not everyone may have the healthy immune system that you do. So, care about your neighbors. Their health is threatened, and if not gathering in person will contribute to healing, then we need to do our part.

Grace and peace to you,
